After visiting family for a couple of weeks, T, Rainbow, and I arrived on the island of Kodiak on December 29. The Emerald Isle of Alaska is about the size of the state of Connecticut but has a population of around 25,000. The population of Kodiak island is concentrated in the town of the same name.

The walk was a welcome reminder of some of the reasons we moved here--the relatively "mild" weather (ha, ha), the wildlife (we enjoyed pointing out seals and otters in the water), the forested mountainous landscape, the proximity to the ocean, and the friendly people.
What an interesting way to bring in the new year.

So happy you made it! I love that park - enjoy!
ReplyDeleteHey, where'd you get the 25,000 population figure? I think there's only about 6,000 in town and 12,000 in the entire borough, which includes some mainland.
ReplyDeleteIt's just stuck with me because I always had the population figures memorized as Sitka was always the fifth largest with 8,000 population, after Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, and Ketchikan. But I think I learned recently that Sitka surpassed Ketchikan which still has me kind of reeling. I think Kodiak was 6th or 7th.
Aww, man, leave it to the lawyer to fact check me. That's the number T has been throwing around. The town of Kodiak is around 6500, according to www.city-data.com. U.S. Census Bureau data puts the island borough at almost 15,000. So...I WAS WRONG. (Well, T was wrong, but I'll let it slide.)
DeleteLOL - sorry, just didn't want you looking for those extra 10,000 people somewhere. :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like Kodiak is the 8th largest city in Alaska with that population. Crazy, eh?
Ha!
